Heavy rains always expose AMC

Ara: Even a two hour rain exposes the drainage system of Ara Municipal Corporation (AMC). Most of the low lying areas under AMC get waterlogged after heavy rains as witnessed on Sunday. The rainwater has even entered the business establishments and houses.

Rain water  entered many houses in Katira, Pakari, K G Road, M P Bagh, Old Policeline, Bind Toli, Syndicate, Mirganj, Awarpur, Gausganj, Ramgarhia, Maulabagh, Hari Jee Ka Hata and Babu Bazaar areas on Sunday. Sheesh Mahal Chowk, Gopali Chowk, Mahavir Tola, Sheoganj, Shital Tola, D T road, are also waterlogged and a foul smell has also started emanating from the overflowing drains. Residents of Ara complained that their ward councillors seldom bother to ensure cleaning of the drains under their respective wards.

The condition of main vegetable market at Sheesh Mahal Chowk becomes a deplorable after rain. “You only soil your clothes while buying vegetables in the market,” said a housewife Neha Devi. The is garbage from the market ares is never removed. Stray pigs, cattle and dogs on the streets are a real nuisance.

Ara, the headquarters of Bhojpur district, had a good drainage sytem in the past. But,  now the drains are choked to the brim due the apathetic attitude of the municipal authorities.Water discharge is hindered. Slush and dirt spill over to the roads after heavy rains. Pedestrians and two-wheeler riders pass through them with handkerchief on their nose, said Hare Ram Singh of Shivganj.

The sight of human excreta flowing through the drains is all the more nauseating and disgusting, said a resident of Milki Mohalla locality Md Danish Rizwan.

Municipal Commissioner, AMC, Pramod Kumar said that all the drains of the town were cleaned and would once again be cleared within a fortnight and filth and garbage will be removed from the roads. He said that all the residents of the town have been requested to remove encroachments from government land.
