Patna : World No 4 Akane Yamaguchi, 22, Japan, beat World No 5 and Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu, 24, India, in straight games to lift the women’s singles title at Blibli Indonesia Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1,000 tournament, at Istor Gelora Bung Karmo, Jakarta, Indonesia, dashing the latter’s hope of winning her first title in 2019.
Fourth seed Yamaguchi, who had stunned World No 1 Tai Tzu Ying, 25, Chinese Taipei, in the semi-finals on July 20, 2019, beat 5th seed Sindhu 21-15, 21-16 in 51 minutes in the final on July 21. Yamaguchi won 42 rallies in the match to 31 by Sindhu. She also won 8 consecutive points in the match to 5 by the Indian. Sindhu, however, still leads Yamaguchi 10-5 Head to Head.
Yamaguchi got 12,000 points for winning the singles title while runner-up Sindhu had to settle for 10,200 points.
