Ara : A day long workshop on ‘Tobacco Control’ was organised jointly by ‘Disha—Ek Prayash’ and ‘Salam Bombay Foundation’ near Old Policeline on March 10, 2019. Labour Superintendent Rakesh Ranjan and District Welfare Officer (DWO) Dilendra Kumar jointly inaugurated the workshop. Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Sunita Kumari, conducted the meeting and also extended vote of thanks.
Speaking on the occasion, Labour Superintendent Rakesh Ranjan said the people are still not health conscious. He said that teachers have everlasting impact on their students and so it is their responsibility too to make the students aware of dangers posed by tobacco in life. He advised the teachers to abstain from tobacco themselves first before telling the students about the harms caused by tobacco.
DSW Dilendra Kumar said that Bhojpur district would be tobacco free once teachers and other members of the society take a firm decision about it. Nothing is impossible, he said.
Assistant Manager, Salam Bombay Foundation, Dipesh Thakkar imparted training to at least 35 teachers of different schools in Bhojpur district who participated at the workshop. He told them about different forms of tobacco and its effects on human health. He said that over 2.5 lakh people using tobacco suffer from mouth cancer in India which is largest in the world and added that at least 10 lakh people died due to cancer every year in India which is 85% of the total death due to tobacco in the world. He also said that tobacco lowered life expectancy by 15 %.
