Patna : World No 36 Venus Williams, 38, USA, upset World No 3 Petra Kvitová, 28, Czech Republic, in the women’s singles second round of Indian Wells Masters at California, USA, on March 10, 2019.
Venus, the winner of 7 Grand Slam singles titles includinf five Wimbledon titles, defeated two-time former Wimbledon Champion Kvitová 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to enter the Round of 32 where she will face Christina McHale, USA. Kvitová though fired 10 Aces in the match to none by Venus. Kvitová also committed 10 double faults to 4 by Venus. Venus broke Kvitová’s service 5 times while the latter broke her service thrice. Kvitová won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Venus.
World No 59 Ekaterina Alexandrova, 24, Russia, upset World No 13 Caroline Wozniacki, 28, Demanrk, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 in the second round. Both gthe players broke each other’s service 5 times each. Wozniacki won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Alexandrova. Alexandrova will face World No 23 Belinda Bencic, 22, Switzerland, in the Round of 32.
World No 5 Karolina Pliskova, 26, Czech Republic, and World No 8 Angelique Kerber, 31, Germany, and World No 9 Aryna Sabalenka, 20, Belarus, have entered the Round of 32.
