Sasaram : Rita Devi, 25, was strangulated to death at her in-laws’ place at village Kastar Mahadev under Bikramgtanj police station in Rohtas district on April 17, 2019, evening, for Rs 3 lakh cash in dowry.

Police reached there and recovered the body and sent it to Sasaram Sadar Hospital for post-mortem. A named FIR has been lodged by Bikamganj police station against seven persons including Rita Devi’s husband Pawan Singh and uncle-in-law Arun Kumar on the statement of her father but no arrest has so far been made in this regard as all the named accused are absconding.

SHO, Bikramganj police station, Priyaranjan said that Baban Singh of Jethwar under Tarari police station in Bhojpur district had married his daughter Rita Devi with Pawan Singh alias Munna Kumar, son of late Jhulan Singh of Kastar village under Bikramganj police station in Rohtas district in 2016. After the marriage, her in-laws demanded Rs 3 lakh in dowry and when their demand was not fulfilled, they started torturing her both physically and mentally and finally strangulated her to death. He also said that Pawan Kumar alias Munna Kumar allegedly also had illicit relation with another woman of the village which Rita Devi always protested.

The SHO said that after killing Rita Devi, her in-laws took her body to the crematorium to perform the last rites to erase evidence but in the meantime police reached there and recovered the body and brought it over to Sasaram Sadar Hospital for post-mortem. The SHO said that police were conducting raids to arrest the accused.
