Patna : World No 3 and six-time champion Roger Federer, 38, Switzerland, sailed into the third round but World No 100 Tennys Sandgren, 28, USA, stunned World No 8 Matteo Berrettini, 23, Italy, in a five-set slugfest in second round of Australian Open (AO) 2020 at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on January 22, 2020.
Third seed Roger Federer, the winner of 20 Grand Slam title, beat World No 42 Filip Krajinovic, 27, Serbia, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 in second round at Rod Laver Arena firing 42 winners. Federer won 7 break points in the match to 1 by Krajinovic. The Swiss fired 14 Aces in the match to 4 by Krajinovic. Federer also won 5 games in a row in the match to 2 by the Serbian. Roger won 49 service points to 37 by Krajinovic. It was Federer’s 99th win at Australian Open.
Sandgren beat Berrettini in a five-set marathon 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 7-5 in 3 hr 23 minutes in 2nd round on January 22. The American hammered 22 Aces in the match to 18 by Berrettini, the US Open semi-finalist in 2019. The Italian though won 3 break points in the match to 2 by the American. Berrettini also won 5 games in a row to 3 by Sandgren. The Italian also won 113 service points in the match to 107 by the American World No 100. Sandgren, however, won more rallies in the match. World No 12 Fabio Fognini, 32, Italy, survived scare before beating World No 66 Jordon Thompson, 25, Australia, in five-sets 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 in 2nd round at Margaret Court Arena. Both the players won 3 break points each in the match. Fognini though won 7 games in a row to 3 by the Australian. The Italian fired 10 Aces in the match to 12 by the Australian. Fognini committed 6 double faults to 4 by Thompson. Fognini won 110 service points to 108 by the Australian.
World No 9 Roberto Bautista Agut, 3, Spain, beat Michael Mmoh, USA, in four-sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 in 2nd round. Agut won 6 break points in the match to 1 by Mmoh.
