Gopalganj: A 55 year old charwaha Chandrika Rai, who was mercilessly assaulted at village Sahpur under Sidhwaliya police station in Gopaganj district on January 18 evening, succumbed to his injuries at Patna Medical College and  Hospital (PMCH) late in the night the same day.

Locals said that Chandrika was moving in a field at village Sahpur with his buffaloes and the cattle were grazing grass. One of the buffaloes strayed into the sugarcane field of Jitendra Sharma at village Jhanjhawa. Sharma along with his sons was irrigating his field. Seeing the buffalo grazing his field, Sharma along with his sons reached there and assaulted Chandrika mercilessly with lathis causing serious injuries to him. His family members admitted Chandrika in Gopalganj Sadar Hospital where the attending doctors referred him to PMCH.

The family members returned with the body to their native village on January 19 morning. An FIR was lodged against Jitendra Sharma, Sonu Sharma and Monu Sharma on the statement of deceased’s wife Lilawati Devi. However, Sidhwaliya police station SHO Arvind Kumar Yadav denied that any arrest has been made in this connection. Chandrika leaves behind four sons and two daughters. The eldest son works in Surat while others still study in village school.
