Bagaha: A female leopard, which was ensnared in  net laid by poachers in Madanpur forests range sector number-2 in Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran district on Monday morning, died after few hours due to injuries caused with nails used the poachers.

The forests officials tried to save the lopard  for hours but in vain. The VTR is the sole tiger reserve in Bihar. Local sources said that the leopard was ensnared in iron trap about 5 am on Monday but forests officials including Forests range officer RK Sinha, trainee DFO Hemant Pathak and others reached the place about four hours late from  Madanpur range office , 6 km away from there. They tried to rescue the leopard from iron trap. But, the leopard died and only satisfaction for the forests official was that the poachers did not succeed in their mission. of selling its skin.

Meanwhile, Deepnarain Prasad, president , Indian tharu welfare federation, West Champaran, alleged that the incident had exposed the claims of VTR officials that poaching had stopped in the area.as exposed once again. A wildlife activist Gajendra Yadav said that had the tranquilliser been available, the leopard could  have been saved.
