New Delhi : Achal Kumar Joti on July 6, 2017, assumed charge here as the 21st Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India succeeding Dr Nasim Zaidi. Dr. Zaidi demitted office on July 5 after completing his tenure.

After the assuming charge, CEC Joti spoke about the priorities of the Commission and said that the Commission shall pursue vigorously its commitment to hold free, fair, inclusive and credible elections throughout the country. The Commission will also pursue its mission no voter is left behind. The Commission shall actively promote e-Governance for holding of elections to the state assemblies and Parliamentary Elections in the country, CEC Joti said, according to a PIB release.

Joti, 1975 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer,  had been serving as Election Commissioner since May 13, 2015. He superannuated as Chief Secretary to the Government of Gujarat in January 2013 after completing a three-year tenure, according to the PIB release.
