Patna : World No 5 Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, knocked World no 3 Roger Federer, 38, Switzerland, out of Rolex Shanghai Masters, an ATP World Tour 1,000 points tournament, at Shanghai, China, on October 11, 2019, evening, in the QFs scoring his first victory over a Top 10 player this year.

Fifth seed Zverev stunned 2nd seed Federer, winner of 20 Grand Slam singles title, in a three-set thriller 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the tournament in 2hr 4 minutes. Federer had reached SFs of the tournament in 2018. Federer, however, went down fighting winning the second set saving 5 match points. But, Zverev was again all over him in the third set.

Zverev hammered 17 Aces in the match to just 3 by Federer. He won 4 break points in the match to 2 by the Swiss. The German won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by Federer. The German won 66 service points to 57 by the Swiss. Zverev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 71 % & 61 %) was much higher than that of Federer (65 % & 56 %). Zverev now leads Federer 4-3 Head to Head.

Earlier, World No 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 21, Greece, had stunned defending champion and World No 1 Novak Djokovic, Serbia, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the QFs battling back from one set down.
