Patna : World No 81 in WTA rankings Anastasia Potapova, 18, Russia, stunned World No 5 and winner of 3 Grand Slam singles title Angelique Kerber, 31, Germany, in the first round of women’s singles at French Open on May 26, 2019. Potapova beat Kerber 6-4, 6-2 at Roland Garros, Paris, France.
Potapova, the 2016 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion, broke 5th seed Kerber’s service 6 time in the match while the latter broke her service thrice. Kerber had won Wimbledon singles title in 2018. Potapova won 6 games in a row to 2 by Kerber.
World No 9 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, beat World No 52 and winner of 7 Grand Slam titles including 5 Wimbledon titles Venus Williams, 38, USA, 6-3, 6-3 to enter the 2nd round of French Open. Svitolina broke Venus’ service 7 times in the match while the latter broke her service 4 times. Svitolina won 5 games in a row to 2 by Venus. Both the players committed 3 double fault each in the match.
World No 7 Sloane Stephens, 26, USA, beat World No 108 Misaki Doi, Japan, 6-3, 7-6 to enter the 2nd round. Stephens, the 2017 US Open Champion, broke Doi’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke her service twice. Both the players won 3 games each in a row.
