Patna : World No 155 David Ferrer, 36, Spain, stunned World No 3 Alexander Zverev, 21, Germany, in the 2nd round of ATP Miami Open at Florida, USA, beating him in a three-set thriller. Ferrer beat Zverev 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in 2hr 22 minutes on March 24, 2019, at Hard Rock Stadium. World No 99 Andrey Rublev, 21, Russia, a qualifier, upset World No 11 Marin Cilic, 30, Croatia, in the 2nd round.

Zverev though fired 9 Aces in the match to none by Ferrer, a French Open finalist in 2013. Zverev, however, committed 12 double faults to 2 by Ferrer, winner of 27 career titles. Ferrer broke Zverev’s service 5 times while the latter broke his service 4 times in the match. Both the players won three games each in a row in the match. Ferrer will face Frances Tiafoe, 21, USA, in the 3rd round on March 25. Tiafoe beat World No 95 Miomir Kecmanovic , 19, Serbia, 7-6, 7-6 in the 2nd round.

But, World No 5 Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, and World No 10 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, defeated their respective opponents to enter the 3rd round.

Federer beat World No 46 Radu Albot, 29, Moldova, in a tough three-set contest 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in 2hr 08 minutes in the second round. Federer fired 14 Aces in the match to 2 by Albot. Federer won 2 break points to 1 by Albot. Federer won 3 games in a row to 2 by Albot. Federer won 67 service points in the match to 64 by Albot. Federer’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve (77% & 73%) was better than that of Albot (70% & 51%).

Tsitsipas beat World No 60 Mackenzie McDonald, 23, USA, 7-6, 6-1 in 1hr 25 minutes to enter the 3rd round of the tournament. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. Tsitsipas broke McDonald’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service just once. Tsitsipas won 5 games in a row to 3 by McDonald.

Rublev beat Cilic in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to reach the 3rd round. Cilic though fired 9 Aces to 5 by Rublev. Both the players committed 4 double faults each. Rublev broke Cilic’s service 4 times while the latter broke his service twice. Rublev won 4 games in a row to 2 Cilic. Rublev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve (72% & 60%) was much better than that of Cilic (67% & 40%). Rublev will face World No 23 Denis Shapovalov, 19, Canada, in the 3rd round.

World No 29 Grigor Dimitrov, 27, Bulgaria, beat World No 94 Feliciano Lopez, 37, Spain, 6-1, 6-3 to enter the 3rd round. Dimitrov broke Lopez’s service 4 times in the match besides winning 3 games in a row.

World No 58 Reilly Opelka, 21, USA, upset World No 24 Schwartzman, 27, Argentina, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to enter the 3rd round. Opelka fired 8 Aces in the match to 4 by Schwartzman. Both the players won 4 break points each in the match.
