Gopalganj: The court of ADJ-1, Gotpalganj, on January 24 sentenced to two years each rigorous imprisonment (RI) two accused in a case related to atrocity on dalit. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 each fine on both the accused. If they fail to deposit the fine, they would have to serve additional two months imprisonment, the court said.

Police said that one Gunraj Ram, a native of village Koreya under Bhore police station, had received land paper from Bhoodan Yagna Committee on November 7, 1996, and he had taken possession of the land. On September 30, 2003, Bansi Bhagat and Gopi Choudhary of the same village started some construction works on the land. When Gunraj objected to it, both the persons abused him by taking the name of his caste. Gunraj’s wife was also assaulted by Bhagat and Choudhary. An FIR was later lodged with the Harijan police station, Hajipur. After investigation of the case, police submitted the chargesheet and hearing started in the court of ADJ-1.

On Tuesday, the court after hearing the arguments of Special Public Prosecutor Gopichand Yadav and defence lawyer Grijesh Kumar Mishra awarded the punishment to the accused. A lawyer Ajay Kumar said that both the accused were forwarded to judicial custody after the court pronounced the judgment.
