Patna : World No 5 and 3rd seed Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, beat World No 14 and 7th seed Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, in straight sets in the final to lift the ATP Barcelona Open title.
Thiem crushed Medvedev 6-4, 6-0 in the final to win the singles title. Thiem broke Medvedev’s service 5 times while the latter his service only once. Thiem won 7 games in a row in the match to 3 by Medvedev. Thiem won 34 service points to 20 by the Russian. Thiem also fired 2 Aces in the match.
Medvedev committed 3 double faults to 1 by Thiem. Thiem’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve (74 % & 60 %) was much higher than that of Medvedev (36 % & 52 %). Medvedev had also lost in the final of ATP Monte-Carlo Masters last week.
Thiem had defeated 11 time champion and top seed Rafael Nadal, Spain, in the semi-finals. He had defeated winner of 20 Grand Slam titles Roger Federer, Switzerland, to win the Indian Wells Masters title at California, USA, in March 2019.
