Buxar :  Bihar government on January 16 suspended Superintendent, Buxar Central Jail, Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary, and Deputy Superintendent, Sudarshan Prasad Singh, for dereliction of duty resulting in escape of five convicted prisoners from the jail around midnight on December 30, 2016.

After the escape of five convicted prisoners from Buxar Central Jail, IG (prisons) Anand Kishor had formed a two -member committee to inquire into the incident. The committee found the night patrolling and light were not sufficient and that jail administration seldom inspects wards. The report also recommended action against the Jail Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent. On the basis of the report, IG (Prisons) suspended both of them. Three warders of the Buxar Central Jail were suspended the same day for dereliction of duty.

Five inmates of Buxar Central Jail escaped around midnight on December 30, 2016. The inmates, who escaped from the jail, were identified as Sonu Pandey of Ara, Upendra Sah of Saran, Devdhari Rai of Saran, Pradeep Singh of East Champaran, and Sonu Singh of Brahmpur in Buxar. Pradeep Singh of Motihari was awarded capital punishment while the rest four were undergoing rigorous life imprisonment.

Buxar SP Upendra Prasad Sharma said that all the five inmates were admitted to the Medical Ward of the jail as they had feigned illness. escaped through it by jumping the boundary wall of the jail. Buxar police with the help of their Saran counterpart arrested Devdhari Rai on January 3, 2017, and brought him to Buxar.The SP said that the mobile tower indicated that Devdhari Rai of Chhapra had taken shelter somewhere in Chhapra. He immediately sent a police team there. The police team raided a private clinic under Chhapra Muffassil police station and arrested Devdhari Rai.
