Bagaha : Members of Bihar State Farmers Union, State Sugarcane Growers’ Association, and other agriculture related associations held as meeting at Rickshaw Union Office at Bettiah, headquarters of West Champaran district, on January 5, 2019, and criticised Bihar Government for harassing sugarcane farmers by announcing old sugarcane price. They alleged that the government had helped the sugar factories in Bihar by giving them a subsidy of Rs 10 per quintal.
Many speakers including Rama Yadav, Nand Kishore Vikal, Rastriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) district president Ramashankar Kushwaha, Bhartiya Kisan Union district president Nisar Ahmad, Jayant Dwivedi, Vijay Kant Tiwari charged the state government with being ant-farmer. They recalled that the Government had announced that Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACSs) will start paddy procurement from November 15, 2018, but the PACSs were yet procure paddy from the farmers. Even big farmers are reeling under acute economic crisis in the district, they said. They threatened to launch a mass agitation against the government to press their demand starting paddy procurement centre at every panchayat and enhance sugarcane price.
