Lakhisarai: An STF jawan Ajay Kumar Mandal, 30, was killed in an encounter with a guerilla squad of the maoists on Kajra -Jamui border in Lakhisarai district on August 9 late night. Maoists have made their hideouts in the hilly forest areas on Kajra-Jamui border in Lakhisarai district. Mandal was a resident of village Naugachia in Bhagalpur district on August 9 night.
IG, Bhagalpur, Shushil Khopre said that the STF jawan was killed when a police search operation team comprising CRPF, STF and district police of Lakhisarai was on its mission to raid a Maoist hideout atop a hill surrounded by forest known as Dhobarghati hill. But, the naxalites apparently came to know about the police move and started firing at them in which Mandal was killed. Police also fired at them but failed to hit any naxalite, sources said.
The IG said that the search operation has not been stopped and it will continue till the guerilla squad of the Naxalites was eliminated. The body, after post-mortem at Munger sadar hospital, was sent to the village of the jawan under police escort from Munger after giving him a guard of honour to the deceased.
Mandal’s wife, who reached Munger sadar hospital where post- mortem was done in presence of the SPs of Munger and Lakhisarai, said Ajay had talked to her at 11 pm on Tuesday and inquired about the preparations for the first birthday celebrations of his younger son-Naitik Kumar on Thursday. Ajay died before medical help could reach him.
