Patna : Sri Lanka were 275/9 in 87 overs at stumps on day 1 in their first innings in the first test against New Zealand at Basin Reserve, Wellington, New Zealand, with wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella unbeaten on 73 in 91 balls with 10 fours. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne scored 79 in 144 balls with 11 fours while Angelo Mathews scored 83 in 153 balls with 9 fours and a six.

New Zealand won the toss but opted to bowl. Sri Lanka lost their first three wickets for only 9 runs with opener Danushka Gunathilaka felling to fast bowler Tim Southee for just 1. Dhananjay de Silva also fell for 1 to Southee when the score was 7. Kusal Mendis all fell to Southee for 2 when the score was 9. Karunaratne added 132 runs for the 4th wicket with Angelo Mathews. Captain Dinesh Chandimal also fell to Southee for 6. Southee also accounted for Mathews.

For New Zealand, Tim Southee took 5/67 while Trent Boult took 1/77. Neil Wagner took 2/75 while Colin de Grandhomme took 1/35.
