Patna : Six time champion and World No 8 Serena Williams, 37, USA, defeated World No 22 Petra Martic, 28, Croatia, at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York City, USA, to enter women’s singles quarter-finals of US Open on September 1, 2019, late night. But, World No 16 Johanna Konta, 28, Great Britain, upset World No 3 Karolina Pliskova, 27, Czech Republic, in the Round of 16. World No 5 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, defeated World No 9 Madison Keys, 24, USA, to enter the QFs.

Serena, who won her first US Open title in 1999 and the 6th in 2014, beat Martic 7-5, 6-4 in Round of 16. She won 3 break points in the match to 1 by Martic. Serena also won 3 games in a row. The American won 42 service points to 38 by the Croatian. The American served 4 Aces in the match to 2 by Martic. Serena will face World No 18 Wang Qiang, China, in QFs on September 3, 2019. Wang had stunned World No 2 Ashleigh Barty in Round of 16.

Konta upset Pliskova 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 in Round of 16 coming from behind to advance to the QFs. Third seed Pliskova though fired 16 Aces in the match to 5 by Konta. Pliskova, however, also committed 9 double faults in the match. Konta won 5 break points to 3 by Pliskova. Konta also won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Pliskova. Konta won 65 service points to 57 by the World No 3.

Svitolina beat 2017 US Open finalist Madison Keys 7-5, 6-4 in Round of 16 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on September 2, 2019, early morning. Keys though fired 7 Aces in the match to just 1 by Svitolina. The World No 5 won 2 break points besides winning 3 games in a row in the match. Svitolina will face Konta in the QFs on September 3.
