World No 5 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, defeated World No 9 Madison Keys, 24, USA, to enter the QFs.
Serena, who won her first US Open title in 1999 and the 6th in 2014, beat Martic 7-5, 6-4 in Round of 16. She won 3 break points in the match to 1 by Martic. Serena also won 3 games in a row.
