Patna : World N0 24 and 2016 champion Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, on September 2, 2019, joined compatriot and five-time champion Roger Federer, 38, in the quarter-finals of US Open at New York City, USA, after top seed and World No  1 Novak Djokovic, 32, Serbia, retired in the 3rd set in their Round of 16 at Arthur Ashe Stadium due to shoulder injury trailing 4-6, 5-7, 1-2. The match witnessed long rallies between the two players.

Wawrinka won 4 break points in the match to 1 by defending champion Djokovic. The Swiss, who had also defeated Djokovic in 2016 US Open final too, fired 9 Aces in the match to 2 by the top seed. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Djokovic thus failed to defend his 2,000 points at the US Open. Djokovic, however, still leads Wawrinka 19-6 Head to Head. The Serbian had won US Open title in 2011, 2015, and 2018. Djokovic has won 75 career titles.

World No 5 Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, beat World No 118 Dominik Koepfer, a qualifier,  in four-sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 in Round of 16 at Louis Armstrong Stadium to enter the quarter-finals. Medvedev fired 15 Aces in the match to 2 by the German. The Russian won 6 break points to 4 by Koepfer. He also won 5 games in a row to 3 by Koepfer, 25. Both the players committed 5 double faults each in the match. The Russian won 78 service points to 69 by the German. Medvedev will face Wawrinka in QFs on September 3, 2019. Koepfer had stunned World No 18 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 27, Georgia, in 3rd round.

World No 78 Grigor Dimitrov, 28, Bulgaria, beat World No 38 Alex de Minaur, 20, Australia, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to enter the quarter-finals. Dimitrov won 3 break points in the match to none by Minaur, who had defeated World No 7 Kei Nishikori, Japan, in 3rd round. The Bulgarian also won 3 games in a row in the match. He won 67 service points to 61 by the Australian. Dimitrov will face Roger Federer in the QFs the same day.
