Patna : The Supreme Court, in a historic majority judgement by 3:2 on August 22, 2017, declared the practice of divorce through triple talaq among muslims as void, illegal and constitutional. It held that the triple talaq is against the basic tenets of Quran.

The majority verdict said that any practice including triple talaq, which is against the tenets of Quran, is unacceptable. The constitution bench heard seven petitions filed by muslim women including one who was divorced on WhatsApp challenging the age old preactice.
