New Delhi : Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ along with senior women officers of the Ministry planted a sapling in memory of Gaura Devi, Chipko Movement Activist, in New Delhi on March 4, 2020. The HRD Ministry has organised various programmes as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

While remembering Gaura Devi, Pokhriyal said that she was a simple woman from the mountainous rural environment, who  was ready to sacrifice her life to protect the trees. He said that Gaura Devi made the whole world aware of the invisible relationship between environment, trees, fodder, livestock, and rural life. Her vision and commitment towards environment protection is an inspiration to all of us, he said.

In fact, following her footsteps, many other women are at the forefront of promoting the environmental revolution at the global level. Pokhriyal added that we need activists and protectors of environment like her in the present times when we are faced with the challenge of climate change and threat to environment, according to a PIB release.

The HRD Ministry is celebrating Women’s Week from March 1 to March 8, 2020. In this sequence, MHRD on March 4  remembered the women of history who have made significant contribution in the past.
