Patna : Fourteen wickets fell on the first day of the second test between New Zealand (NZ) and Sri Lanka (SL) at Hagley Oval, Christchurch, New Zealand, on December 26, 2018. Sri Lanka won the toss but opted to bowl.

Batting first, New Zealand were all out for 178 in 50 overs with fast bowler Tim Southee scoring 68 in 65 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes and wicketkeeper W J Watling scoring 46 in 90 balls with 4 fours. New Zealand had lost six wickets for only 64 runs. Southee and Watling added 108 runs for the 7th wicket. Former captain Ross Taylor was run out for 27 with 4 fours while captain Kane Williamson fell to fast bowler Suranga Lakmal for 2.

Henry Nicholls also fell to Lakmal for 1.  Lakmal, 31, a former test captain, started the New Zealand slide by taking the wickets of openers Jeet Raval and Tom Latham who were out for 6 and 10 runs respectively. He also accounted for Neil Wagner, who was out for duck. Fast bowler Lahiru Kumara, 21, took the wickets of Watling, Colin de Grandhomme, and Ajaj Patel.

For Sri Lanka, Suranga Lakmal took 5/54 in 19 overs while Lahiru Kumara took 3/49 in 14 overs. Spinner Dilruwan Perera, 36,  took 1/13 in 5 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka were 88/4 in 32 overs at stumps on day 1 with Angelo Mathews batting on 27 and Roshen Silva batting on 15. Sri Lanka had lost three wickets for 21 runs only in 9.4 overs with Tim Southeee taking the wickets of openers Dhanushka Gunathilaka (8) and Dumuth Karunaratne (7) and captain Dinesh Chandimal (6). Kusal Mendis fell to Colin de Grandhomme for 15.

Southee took 3/29 while Grandhomme took 1/19.
