New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of murder of a man in custody at police station (PS), Ambedkar Nagar, New Delhi on August 22, 2017. It has asked its DIG (Investigation) to collect requisite reports from the authorities concerned, examine them and submit a report within eight weeks.

The incident was widely reported in the media and the NHRC has also received an intimation regarding it from the Delhi police as per its standing guidelines. In Dakshinpuri area, a quarrel broke out between two neighbours: Vishal Lali, 22, and Anil, 28. Police received a PCR call about it and brought them to the police station, Ambedkar Nagar, to conduct an inquiry. Both of them were kept in the same room, according to an NHRC release.

A fight broke out between them and Vishal attacked Anil with a file poker and inflicted multiple punctured wounds before police personnel on duty could intervene. An injured Anil was taken by an autorickshaw to AIIMS, Trauma Centre, where the doctor on duty declared him brought dead. Vishal was arrested and subsequently a case was registered at police station, Ambedkar Nagar, New Delhi, according to the NHRC release .
