Patna: A Patna Police team on December 22  arrested notorious naxalite and Magadh range central committee member of a banned naxal outfield Mohd. Abdul Kalam Azad alias Nasim alias Azad near Bus Stand at Karbigahiya. He was absconding for the past 20 years. Police said that prima facie, it seems that Azad has amassed assets worth crores of rupees which was being probed. If the property is found illegal, it would be seized. Several cases were lodged against him in Gaya, Arwal, Jehanabd, Aurangabad and Patna.

Police said that during investigation it also came to light that Azad is possessing a sim card that had been probably issued from Karnatka. The cops are also investigating whether Azad has links with naxals of Karnataka, police said.

Police said that Patna Senior SP (SSP) Manu Maharaaj had been receiving inputs that Mohd. Abdul has been seen in Patna. A special team was constituted at the instance of SSP and instructions were issued for collecting information about him and his associates. The special police team along with the members of the Technical cell started collecting information about Azad and his associates besides reviewing the cases against him. The team members started conducting raids and also quizzed Azad’s friends and his family members. The entire operation was being monitored by SSP himself.

Police said that the members of the special police team came to know that Azad was at the bus stand at Mithapur  waiting for a bus. A team reached there and arrested Azad, a resident of Karauti under Sigori police station in Patna. During interrogation, the cops came to know that in 1996, Azad had slit open the throat of one Rajdeo Yadav and in the same year he had led a team that had attacked a police team under Paliganj police station in which several policemen had sustained injuries.
