Nadal, Delpo enter SF of US Open 2018

Patna : World No 1 in ATP rankings and winner of 17 Grand Slam singles titles Rafael Nadal, 32, Spain, defeated World No 9 Dominic Thiem, 25, Austria, in a five-set marathon lasting 4 hours and 49 minutes to enter the semi-finals of US Open championship on September 5, 2018. Defending champion Nadal beat Thiem 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 7-6 in the quarter-finals at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Flushing Meadows, Newyork. Nadal now leads Thiem 8-3 head to head.

Thiem had reached the quarter-finals of US open for the first time. He had lost to Nadal in the final of French Open in 2018.  Nadal had won US Open singles title in 2010, 2013, and 2017.

Thiem, who hammered 18 Aces in the match to just 3 by Nadal, won the first set 6-0 but lost the next two sets to his rival. But, Thiem roared back to win the fourth set in tie-breaker taking the match to the fifth set. Nadal won the fifth set in tie-breaker.

Both the players committed 4 double faults each in the match. Thiem won 6 break points to 5 by Nadal. Thiem’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was also better than that of Nadal, who was stretched to four-sets both in his third and fourth round matches. Thiem won 6 games in a row to 5 by Nadal in the match.

Delpo : World No 3 Juan Martin del Porto, 29, Argentina, defeated World No 11 John Isner, 33, USA, in four-sets 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 in the quarter-finals on September , 2018, late, night to enter the semi-finals of US open. Thiem hammered 26 Aces in the match to 14 by Del Porto, who had won US Open title in 2009. Both the players committed 4 double faults each in the match. Del Porto’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was much better than that Isner. Del Porto also won 3 break points. He also won 5 games in a row.
