Patna : World No 1 Rafael Nadal, 33, Spain, beat World No 6 and Nitto ATP Finals Champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, 21, Greece, in a three-set thriller lasting 3hr 15 minutes to win his 5th title at Mubadala World Tennis Championship, an Exhibition Event, at Abu Dhabi, UAE, on December 21, 2019. Nadal edged past Tsitsipas 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 battling back from one set down. World No 2 Novak Djokovic has won this trophy four times. It was Nadal’s 10th appearance at the event.
Tsitsipas won the first set in tiebreak and then had two break point points on Nadal’s service at 4-4 in the second set. But from here, Nadal staged a remarkable comeback holding his serve to lead 5-4 and then winning the second set. Nadal was leading 4-2 in the third set but Tsitsipas rallied back to take the set to tiebreak. But, Nadal powered his way through the tiebreak (7-3) to win the match. It was Nadal’s 6th victory over Tsitsipas including 5 wins on ATP World Tour. Tsitsipas had defeated Djokovic in the semi-finals.
Djokovic secured the third place defeating World No 17 Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, 7-5, 6-3.
