Medvedev & Zverev to clash in Rolex Shanghai Masters’ final

Patna : Third seed Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, and 5th seed Alexander Zverev, 22, Germany, will clash in the final of Rolex Shanghai Masters final at Shanghai, China, on October 13, 2019.

World No 4 Medvedev beat World No 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 21, Greece, 7-6, 7-5 in 1 hr 36 minutes in a close contest in the first semi-finals on October 12, 2019, to reach his 6th ATP event final this year. The Russian won 2 break points to 1 by Tsitsipas.

The Russian won 3 games in a row to 2 by the Greek. Tsitsipas fired 9 Aces in the match to 6 by Medvedev, the US Open finalist this year. Medvedev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve (84 % & 70 %) was much higher than that of Tsitsipas (80% & 52%). Medvedev now leads Tsitsipas 5-0 Head to Head. Tsitsipas had stunned World No 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic in the QFs.

World No 6 Alexander Zverev entered the final defeating World No 13 Matteo Berrettini, 23, Italy, the 11th seed, 6-3, 6-4 in 67 minutes in the second semi-finals. Zverev fired 11 Aces in the match to 2 by Berrettini, the US Open semi-finalist this year.

Zverev, who had stunned World No 2 Roger Federer, Switzerland, also won 2 break points besides winning 3 games in a row. Zverev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 89% & 75%) was much higher than that of Berrettini (77% & 58 %). Zverev now leads Berrettini 2-1 Head to Head.

All the four semi-finalists were in 21-23 years age group indicating a generational shift in the tennis.
