Patna : World No 32 in ATP rankings Deniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, lifted the Japan Open tennis championship singles title at Tokyo on October 7, 2018, beating the two-time champion and World No 12 Kei Nishikori, 28, Japan, in the final. Japan Open is an AT World Tour 500 points event. Nishikori had won singles title at Japan Open in 2012 and 2014. With 500 ranking points, Medvedev’s position will improve considerably in the ATP rankings to be released on October 8, 2018. Nishikori had reached semi-finals of US Open 2018.

Medvedev, a qualifier, upset third seed Nishikori in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in the final on October 7. Medvedev served 8 Aces in the match to 4 by Nishikori. Nishikori committed 3 double faults while Medvedev committed one double fault. Medvedev also won 3 break point. He also won three games in a row in the match. It was third ATP singles title for Medvedev in 2018.
