Ranchi ( Jharkhand) : More than 2,000 persons including former chief ministers Hemant Soren and Babulal Marandi, former union minister Subodh Kant Sahay, Jharkhand congress chief Ajay Kumar, Nirsa MLA Arup Chattterjee were taken into custody in different part of the state during the Jharkhand Bandh on July 5, 2018, the call for which call given by opposition parties to protest Land Ccquisition Bill introduced by Jharkhand government. However, no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state.
While Hemant Soren, Ajay Kumar, Subodh Kant Shay were arrested from Ranchi, former CM Babulal Marandi was arrested from Dhanbad along with scores of supporters of their respective parties. More than 350 persons were taken into custody at Ranchi.
It may be mentioned here that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), JVM, Congress, RJD and left parties had given a Jharkhand Bandh call on July 5 to protest the Land Acquisition Bill brought by the the Raghubar Das government which according to them was initiated to take back the land rights of ‘tribal’ and ‘Moolwasi’ and hand it over to industrialists and corporate czars buying it(land) at throw away price.
The Bandh was observed at Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Deoghar, Simdega, Godda, Sahibganj, Hazaribagh and Ranchi and other parts of Jharkhand. The leaders of opposition parties protested on main roads due to which most of the roads looked deserted while most of the shops remained closed. Later, the top leaders of almost all opposition parties were taken into custody and shifted to temporary makeshift camp jails.
Before being taken into custody, Hemant Soren alleged that the NDA government was anti- tribal and anti Moolwasis. Describing the ‘Bandh’ as big success, Soren warned the government to withdraw the bill otherwise opposition parties will start a mass movement in the state.
Ranchi DC RM Ray said that the Bandh passed off peacefully without any untoward incident.
