Patna : India were 303/4 in 90 overs in their first innings at stumps on day 1 in the 4th test against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, Australia, riding on an unbeaten 130 in 250 balls with 16 fours by Cheteshwar Pujara, his 18th test century and 3rd  in the series, and an unbeaten 39 in 58 balls with 5 fours by Hanuma Vihari. Pujara and Vihari have so far added 75 runs in 118 balls for the 5th wicket. Opener Mayank Agarwal scored 77 in 112 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, India lost the wicket of opener Lokesh Rahul for 9 when the score was 10. Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara then added 116 runs for second wicket. Mayank fell to spinner Nathan Lyon for a well made 77 when the team score was 126. Pujara then added 54 runs for the third wicket with captain Virat Kohli, who fell to fast bowler Josh Hazlewood for 23 when the score was 180. Pujara and Rahane added 48 runs for the 4th wicket. Rahane fell to fast bowler Mitchell Starc for 18 when the score was 228.

For Australia, Josh Hzlewood took 2/51. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon took one wicket each.
