Patna : World No 3 in WTA rankings Simona Halep, 27, World No 7 Karolina Pliskova, 26, Czech Republic, and World No 27 Su-Wei Hsieh, 33, Chinese Taipei, advanced to women’s singles quarter-finals of Miami Open at Florida, USA, on March 26, 2019.
Pliskova beat World No 44 Yulia Putintseva, 24, Kazakhstan, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the 4th round to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament. Pliskova fired 7 Aces in the match to just one by Putintseva. Pliskova, however, committed 5 double faults in the match to 1 by Putintseva. Both the players won 6 break points each. Putintseva won 5 games in a row to 4 by Pliskova.
Halep beat seven time Grand Slam champion and World No 43 Venus Williams, 38, USA, 6-3, 6-3 in the 4th round to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament. Halep broke Venus’ service 4 times while the latter broke her service only once. Halep won 3 games in a row to 2 by Venus. Both the players served 1 Ace each in the match. Halep’s winning percentage both on her first and second serve (76% & 100%) was much better than that of Venus (54% & 50 %).
Su-Wei, who had upset World No 1 Naomi Osaka, 21, Japan, in the 3rd round, upset World No 13 Caroline Wozniacki, 28, Denmark, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 in the 4th round to enter the QFs of the tournament. Wozniacki though fired 5 Aces in the match. Su-Wei won 6 break points to 2 by Wozniacki. Su-Wei won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by Wozniacki. Su-Wei will face World No 19 Anett Kontaveit, 23, Estonia, in the QFs.
