Patna : World No 5 Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, World No 10 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, World No 15 Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, World No 20 David Goffin, 28, Belgium, and World No 23 Denis Shapovalov, 19, Canada, entered the Round of 16 at Miami Open at Florida, USA, on March 26, 2019.
Federer beat World No 103 Filip Krajinovic, 27, Serbia, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in the 3rd round. Federer, the winner of 20 Grand Slam singles title, fired 13 Aces in the match to just 2 by Krajinovic. Federer broke Krajinovic’s service thrice while the latter broke his service only once. Federer also won 5 games in a row to 2 by Krajinovic. Incidentally, Krajinovic won 46 service points to 41 by Federer.
Tsitsipas beat World No 62 Leonardo Mayer, 31, Argentina, 6-4, 6-4 in the 3rd round at Hard Rock Stadium winning 3 games in a row in the match. He also broke Mayer’s service twice in the match. Mayer though fired 6 Aces in the match to 3 by Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas’ winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 78% & 65 %) was much better than that of Mayer (70% & 47%).
Medvedev beat fast rising World No 58 Reilly Opelka, 21, USA, in a three-set thriller 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 in the 3rd round. Opelka hammered 22 Aces in the match to 19 by Medvedev. Both the players committed 3 double faults each in the match. Medvedev’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 91% & 74%) was better than that of Opelka (86 % & 59%). Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Medvedev will face Federer in the Round of 16 on March 27, 2019.
Goffin defeated World No 16 Marco Cecchinato, 26, Italy, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the 4th round. Goffin broke Cecchinato’s service 4 times while the latter broke his service twice. Goffin won 4 games in a row to 2 by Cecchinato. Goffin served 4 Aces in the match to 3 by Cecchinato.
Shapovalov beat World No 99 Andrey Rublev, 21, Russia, 6-3, 7-6 to enter the 4th round of the tournament. Shapovalov served 5 Aces in the match to 2 by Rublev. Shapovalov broke Rublev’s service twice while the latter broke his service once. Shapovalov won 3 games in a row to 2 by Rublev. World No 34 Frances Tiafoe, defeated World No 155 David Ferrer, 36, Spain, in a tough three-set contest 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to enter the Round of 16. Ferrer though fired 9 Aces in the match to 4 by Tiafoe. Tiafoe won 4 break points to 2 by Ferrer. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Ferrer committed 5 double faults to 2 by Tiafoe. Tiafoe will face Goffin in the Round of 16 on March 27.
