Halep beats Bianca in Group Stage match at WTA finals, Svitolina beats Pliskova

Patna : World No 5 and Wimbledon Champion Simona Halep, 28, Romania, and World No 8 Elina Svitolina, 25, Ukraine, won their respective Group Stage matches in Purple Group at WTA Finals at Shenzhen, China, on October 28, 2019.

Fifth seed Simona Halep edged past 4th seed and US Open Champion Bianca Andreescu, 19, Canada, in a three-set thriller 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 rallying back from one set down. Bianca won 7 break points in the match to 6 by Simona. She also won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by the Romanian. But, Simona won 59 service points to 51 by Bianca. Both the players committed 2 double faults each in the match. The Romanian fired 3 Aces to 2 by the Canadian.

Defending champion and 8th seed Elina Svitolina beat World No 2 and 2nd seed Karolina Pliskova, 27, Czech Republic, in a tough contest 7-6, 6-4 in 1 hr 53 minutes. Svitolina won 3 break points in the match to 2 by Pliskova. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Pliskova though fired 7 Aces in the match to 2 by Svitolina. Pliskova, however, committed 6 double faults to 1 by Svitolina.
