Bagaha : The changing course of river Gandak towards its left bank is posing threat to Ramdham Mandir and Mirzatola localities of Bagaha town in West Champaran district in North Bihar.

Huge deposit of silt collected in the riverbed in the mainstream has forced the river Gandak to move towards its left bank in Bagaha town. Although discharge in the Gandak was only 40,000 cusec on July 19, 2017, but the revetment work done three to four years back in about 500 meter stretch along the left bank has been washed away within a week.

Dinesh Kumar Chaudhay, Chief Engineer, Water Resources, Muzaffarpur Flood Control Zone, who had come to take stock of the situation on July 19, said that effortd were on to save the eroding left bank of the river. Sand bags in  nylon crates are being dumped to divert the course of the river and check soil erosion.  Sources said that the Gandak river is olny  five to eight feet away from residential houses at Bagaha.

Vishwanath Mallah, Idarish Mian, Pramod Yadav, Lalji Yadav, Tarkeshwar Prasad Gupta and Banarasi Sahani of Ramdham locality say that tardy pace of flood protection work with sand bags in  nylon crates will not do as it can’t withstand the speedy erosion. The flood protection work is required on war footing with Mirzapuri boulders to divert the course of the Gandak, they claimed. Meanwhile, Rakesh Kumar Singh and Ehteshamul Haque , both social activists, have demanded a probe into alleged loot of public money in the name of flood protection work
