Federer defeated Aljaz Bedene, Slovenia, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, while Djokovic defeated Donald Young, USA, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Former Champion Stan Wawrinka, 32, Switzerland, Richard Berankis, Lithuania, in a tough four set contest 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6. Number 29 seed Richard Gasquet, France, defeated Blaz Kavcic, Slovenia, 6-1, 6-4, 7-5. Number 4 seed Alexander Zverev, 20, Germany, defeated Thomas Fabbiano, Italy, 6-1, 7-6, 7-5 to move into second round.

Guillermo Garcia Lopez, Spain, beat Benoit Paire, France, in four sets 6-0, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Fabio Fignini, Italy, seeded 25, beat Horacio Zeballos, Argentina, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. Albert Ramos Vinolas, Spain, seeded 21, beat Jared Donaldson, USA, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Number 7 seed David Goffin, Belgium, defeated Matthias Bachinger, Germany, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, to enter second round. Number 10 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, Spain, defeated Jason Kubler, Austria, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, in a tough four set contest while Number 6 seed Marin Cilic, Croatia, beat Vasek Pospisil, Canada, 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 in a close contest.
