Patna: Former US Open Champion and Number 6 seed Marin Cilic, 29, Croatia, comfortably defeated Joao Sousa, 28, Portugal, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2, on January 17, 2018, to enter the third round of Australian Open (AO) 2018. Cilic, a Wimbledon finalist in 2017, looked in complete control of his second round match against Sousa, the World Number 70, firing seven aces and making just four unforced errors in the first set. Cilic had lost in the second round of AO in 2017.
Jo Wilfried Tsonga, 32, France, also entered the third round defeating Canadian Denis Shapovalov, 18, the World Number 50, in five sets 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 on January 17. Tsonga, the world Number 15, had reached the final of AO in 2008.
