Eng beat Australia by 16 runs 3rd ODI, Buttler scores century

Patna : England beat Australia by 16 runs in the third ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney, Australia, on January 21, 2018, to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the fiv-match ODI series.

Asked to bat first by Australia, England made 302/6 in 50 overs with wicketkeeper Jose Buttler scoring an unbeaten 100, his 4th ODI ton, in 83 balls hitting 4 sixes and 6 fours and pace bowler Chris Woakes scoring an unbeaten 53 in 36 balls hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes. Buttler and Woakes were involved in an unbeaten 113 partnership for the 7th wicket.

England ODI Captain Eoin Morgan made 41 in 50 balls hitting 2 fours and a six while opener Jonny Bairstow made 39 in 57 balls hitting 2 fours. Opener Jason Roy made 19 in 24 balls hitting 4 fours while Joe Root made 27 in 31 balls hitting just 1 four. Alex Hales was out for 1 while Moen Ali made 6.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood took 2/58, Pat Cummins 1/67, M Stoinis 1/43, spinner Adam Zampa 1/55 and all rounder Mitchell Marsh 1/14. Australia’s star fast bowler Mitchell Starc went wicketless giving away 63 runs in 10 overs.

Chasing a target of 303 to win the third ODI, Australia could score only 286/6 in 50 overs even as opener Aaron Finch, who had made his 10th ODI ton in the 2nd ODI at Melbourne, scored a blistering 62 in 53 balls hitting 3 four and 3 sixes and all rounder Stoinis an explosive 56 in 43 balls hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes. Mitchell March too made 55 in 66 balls hitting 4 fours while Captain Steven Smith made 45 in 66 balls hitting only 1 four. Wicketkeeper Tim Paine remained not out on 31 in 35 balls hitting 1 four. Opener David Warner was out for 8 which included 2 fours.

For England, fast bowler Mark Wood took 2/46 while Chris Woakes took 2/57. Spinner A Rashid 2/51. Buttler was declared Player of the Match. Australia had recently won five-match Ashes series 4-0.
