Patna : World No 1 in ATP rankings Novak Djokovic, Serbia, and World No 2 Rafael Nadal, Spain, World No 3 Roger Federer, Switzerland, and World No 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas, Greece, entered the 3rd round of Italian Open winning their respective second round matches in straight sets at Foro Italico, Rome, Italy, on May 16, 2019, evening. Nadal is bidding for his 9th title at Italian Open.

Four time champion Djokovic beat World No 22 Denis Shapovalov, 20, Canada, 6-1, 6-3 in 66 minutes. Djokovic broke Shapovalov’s service twice in the match besides winning 5 games in a row. Djokovic’s winning percentage on his first serve (86%) was much higher than that of Shapovalov (59%).  But, his winning percentage on his second serve was just 20% to 40 % by Shapovalov. Djokovic won 20 service points to 18 by the Canadian.

Defending champion Nadal defeated World No 41 Jeremy Chardy, 32, France, 6-0, 6-1 in the second round round. Nadal broke Chardy’s service 5 times in the match besides winning 9 games in a row. Nadal’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve ( 67% & 93%) was much higher than that of Chardy ( 44% & 47%). Nadal won 29 service points to 19 by Chardy.

Federer beat World No 72 Joao Sousa, 30, Portugal, 6-4, 6-3 to march into the 3rd round of the clay court tournament. He broke Sousa’s service thrice in the match besides winning 3 games in a row. Federer served 3 Aces in the match to 2 by Sousa. Federer’s winning percentage both on his first and second serve (77% &74%) was much higher than that of Sousa ( 68% & 45%).

Tsitsipas beat World No 263 Jannik Sinner, 17, Italy, 6-3, 6-2 to enter the 3rd round. Tsitsipas broke Sinner’s service 4 times in the match while the latter broke his service once. He won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by Sinner. Tsitsipas won 36 service points to 23 by Sinner.
