Coric stuns Federer to reach ATP Shanghai Open final, to play Djokovic

Patna : World No 19 Borna Coric, 21, Croatia, on October 13, 2018, stunned winner of 20 Grand Slam titles and World No 2 Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, in semi-finals of Shanghai Masters tennis tournament, an ATP World Tour 1,000 point event played on hard courts at Qizhong Forest Sports City Areana, Minhang, China. Coric beat defending champion Federer, the top seed, 6-4, 6-4 in the semi-finals.

Coric had also defeated Federer in three-sets in the final of Halle Open in Germany in 2018. Both Coric and Federer have won two matches each in their 4 meetings so far.

Coric will face winner of 14 Grand Slam titles and reigning Wimbledon and US Open champion Novak Djokovic, 31, Serbia, in the final on October 14, 2018.

Coric, the 13th seed, fired 9 Aces in the match to 8 by Federer. None of two players committed any double fault. Coric won 2 break points besides winning 3 games in a row in the match. Coric’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was much better than that of Federer, who will slip to World No 3 in the ATP rankings to be released on October 15, 2018.

Federer failed to defend his title and consequently lost 1,000 points. He will though get 360 points for reaching semi-finals in 2018. Coric, on the other hand, is likely to jump a few places as he is now assured of getting at least 600 points for reaching the final.
