Patna: Bihar government on Tuesday demanded de-commissioning of Farakka Barrage saying it was causing siltation in river Ganga due to which it recorded maximum water level at Patna, Hathidah and Bhagalpur and the flood caused havoc in these areas.

Participating at the meeting of the committee set up by the centre to look into the siltation in river Ganga in New Delhi on Tuesday, Principal Secretary, Water Resources department, Bihar government, Arun Kumar Singh, also demanded formulation of a National Siltation Management Policy. The committee is headed by Madhav Chitle and was set up on the initiative taken by Bihar government. Singh said once Farakka Barrage is de-commissioned, the silt accumulated in of river Ganga would enter the sea.
