Patna: Taking Suo Motu cognizance of news item ” 10K Biharis die annually of Hepatitis-B” published in Patna edition of the Hindustan Times on Friday, Bihar Human Rights Commission (BHRC) has asked Principal Secretary, health, Bihar government, to submit a report before August 30, 2016, when the matter will be listed next. The commission has issued notice to the Principal Secretary, health, in this regard.

Quoting the deliberations at Patna on World Hepatitis Day on August 28, the news says around 5 % of Bihar’s population is infected with Hepatitis-B and C and only 40% of the population in Bihar is vaccinated. According to the news, lack of adequate awareness to   get vaccinated and comparatively delayed diagnosis are the main reasons behind the resultant fatality.
