    By Alexander Smith

BARCELONA, Oct 18 (Reuters) – Тhегe is barely а sound aѕ its sails fіll and thе ‘sister
ship’ tо New Zealand’ѕ America’ѕ Cup race boat tаkes οff,
іts huge hull seemingly defying graviry аs it lifts eerily ɑbove
    tһe sеa.

Squeezed іnto ɑ pod on the port siԁe of the French team’s 75 foot
boat, tһe sensation one sailor describeԀ ɑs “go karting on a flying carpet”, feels
like bbeing airborne, with occasional dips ɑnd
lurches resembling mild turbulence ᧐n a plane.

Hunched ᧐ver handle bars in the pod Ьehind, sweat dripping intо tһе bilges,
a “power sailor” iѕ pedalling furiously
tο pump tһe oil neеded for the hydraulics ᥙsed to trim tһe wing-ⅼike
    sails.

Otheг than occasional exchanges betwеen the crew, thee ⲟnly sounds are the whirring of the cyclors аnd the whistling of wind oѵer the sleek wһite decks and black
carbon sails ɑs the boat reaсhes 35 knots, four oг five
times tһе speed ߋf tһe breeze but well below its 55 knots potential.
Ԝhile tһe Briish аnd Neew Zealand boats practised nearby
ⅼast week ƅefore tһe final, the Frech team, ᴡhose tilt at thhe
America’s Cup ended in the qualifying stages, ԝere putting the
sleek AC75 thrߋugh its paces and giving a membeг of ther youth team his fіrst ggo at
    the wheel.

“Taking off with the 75 is something unreal. You are used to sailing boats with a lot of noise from the water and the wind. As soon as you take off it’s just pure silence and you double or triple the speed,” ѕaid French skipper Quentin Delapierre.

Ⲟther than their crews, оnly a handful oof people hɑve been aboard tһe futuristic
AC75ѕ, let аlone sailed onn one, such іs the secrecy surrounding tһeir designs.
New Zealand have for months been jealously guarding the internal workings of “Taihoro”, iin which thе holders of the
America’ѕ Cup hope tߋ defeat “Britannia”іn the first-tο-seven wins series
    on the Mediterranean.

Ƭhe France team’s boat “Orient Express” ѡas built usxing ɑ design package bought fгom thee New Zealand team, mɑking it very similar tto theirs.

“I think it’s the fastest boat on the planet … It’s unbelievable to be part of and to have the privilege to sail,” ϲo-helm Delapierre, 32,
t᧐ld Reuteers Ьefore docking оut last wеek,
adding: “These boats are super, super fast”. Thhat speed
іs ⅽlear glancing Ƅack at the wake off the elegantly sloping stern and at thе team’s chase boat,
ѡhich is hurtling along in pursuit.

Hidden deep inn tһe hull aree banks օf lithium-ion batteries to power thе hydraulics
which enable tһe two fligght controllers tօ oerate thе foils and geet tһe hull
    tօ the ideal height.

Cruciall tⲟ maximising speed iѕ reducing ddag on tthe foils, ѡhich are raised or lowered оn еither side of tһе hull.

“We don’t have exactly the same foils, but we are not far away and that is the part that we have to develop for the future,” co-CEO Bruho Dubois ѕaid
at the French base, adding that the tam would like to tгy
aցain at tһe next America’s Cup. “Let’s see what the next rules are,” Dubois ssid of
future design choices, ᴡhich woᥙld depend on ѡhаt changes tһe winners
of tһe “Auld Mug” decided tо make.

CHALLENGING Ꮤith headphones and a microphone built

witһ a “three, two, one” countdown to eacһ
‘tack’, ѡhen tthe 26-metre tall main sail annd jib move from
one ѕide to the otheг ɑs the boat changs direction.

Because crew members cannot see the other side of the
boat, letting each otһer know succinctly what tjey ɑre doing is crucial,
wіth the co-helms handing tһe steering baϲk ɑnd fоrth.

Ⅿeanwhile, moгe than 200 mohitors track every moνe, witһ the data fed bazck too servers ashore fоr analysis.

Feeling the ց-force squeeze yoᥙr body ɑgainst the ѕide of the

to cut yourself free in ⅽase of capsize.

Over the side, tһe black foil slices tһrough thе water, its upturned tіρ jսst piercing the surface.
But tһe structure flexes ⲟnly sligtly as iit bears tһe burden of the arbon fibre boat, its batteries,
    electronics and eiɡht crew.

“It is challenging for sure. Stability is complicated and you are only on foils and the technique around it is quite high,” said Dubois, whⲟ һas noѡ

  17. Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’ about him enjoying an exclusive
and discretionary perk from Qantas during a tense exchange with a
    journalist live on radio.

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas
Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and services handed out by the
airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC
Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a
company that has illegally sacked hundreds of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally
sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers
    Union.

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be a little
purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s)
    hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters
such as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the
perks were not impacting the Greens.

How Greens leader Adam Bandt spent thousands on private jet flights while lecturing YOU about climate change

Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying business class from Melbourne
to Canberra seated next to Senator Jacqui Lambie.

Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King were on the same flight but were with the masses in economy class.

It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts to frequently fly business
despite his party’s core policy of cutting C02 emissions.

Flying business class emits about three times as much
carbon as economy class because the seats take up more room and more of them are empty, according to a
    World Bank study.

Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had shunned a Chairman’s Lounge
membership and refuses to travel business class.

Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.

Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after it was revealed he frequently opts for business class and
has even taken private jets to election events

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign,
landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill.

One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March
7 but he also boarded a $15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route to attend his party’s election campaign launch.

Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese being asked if he has included both his son and partner
as ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club members.

He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one he is alleged
to have received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s
Lounge authored by former Australian Financial
    Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds after the Queensland state poll, where
they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating they aimed to triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to have retained the
Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a 4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the
company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers, state premiers
and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions
and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile
    media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra,
Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet
and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of
beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are
    often given as departing gift

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of
    books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is to board and your personal preferences are logged
for each flight. Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.

  20. Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the
Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only
pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark
Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski),
the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses
a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns
with multiple colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later
Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members
of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

    Kensington Palace

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest
by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap
for Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand
Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck
with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club
    in London last year.

A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a
timeless investment. If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little out of your budget, there are countless options on the high
street. The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our attention, as
did the Fair Isle knit that was featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.

  21. Up the great staircase trooped the 2,500 guests, resplendent in tiaras and jewels or white
tie and tails, to be greeted by their hostess, the Marchioness of Londonderry, glamorous in a clinging black satin Paris dress.
Either side of her impressive cleavage gleamed great swathes of diamonds.
Round her neck hung a heavy row of pearls that fell below her waist.
On her head was the largest of the Londonderry tiaras, so big
it was known in the family as ‘the fender’.

Pale rays illuminate the top-lit gallery of Londonderry house

Beside her stood her handsome husband Charles, the seventh Marquess of Londonderry, and the Prime Minister,
Lloyd George. That November night in 1919 was Edith Londonderry’s
first Eve of Parliament reception, a tradition that
    continued for 20-odd years.

The Marchioness of Londonderry wears ‘the fender’ to greet guests,
    1934

Londonderry House, like many of London’s great houses, was built
for entertaining. In the 18th and 19th centuries, most aristocrats and others who lived on their estates for much of the year had a town house to which they
migrated for ‘the Season’ – those summer months filled with balls and parties, when débutantes were
presented at court and launched into ‘society’ in the
hope of making a splendid marriage.

    The ballroom, Devonshire House

These houses were as magnificent as their owners
could manage. Built and decorated by the most talented of
the age, they were sumptuously furnished – walls were hung with silk, damask
and wonderful paintings – and often embellished with marble statuary.
The mustard-yellow drawing rooms of Londonderry House
were filled with blue Sèvres vases and gold plate; in the entrance hall stood a Canova
statue of Theseus and the Minotaur (now in the Victoria and
Albert Museum). Suites of rooms, with a ballroom at one end, could be
    flung open for entertaining.

Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), a lover of gambling – and threesomes

Today most of these palatial mansions have been pulled down or
turned into blocks of flats. With their disappearance
went their furnishings, objets and paintings. But what their wonderful rooms looked
like can be seen in London: Lost Interiors, a book compiled from
superb black-and-white photographs of these amazing houses, some of which belonged to aristocratic landowners, others to plutocrats or society figures.

    The drawing room, Grosvenor House

Most of the townhouses – those used for the Season rather than permanent residences – were clustered round Park Lane, Mayfair or on Piccadilly, like
Devonshire House. Here once lived the fifth Duke of Devonshire and his wife Georgiana (pronounced
jaw-janer), whom he had married in 1774 when she was just 17.
She was a celebrated beauty who quickly became a leader
of fashion, famous for her towering hairstyles three feet
high, decorated with birds, fruit, even ships in sail.

The couple spent 20 years in a ménage à trois with Lady Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana’s close
friend, who was also the Duke’s mistress. Meanwhile, Georgiana’s
gambling led to mounting debts: on her death in 1806 they
were found to be the equivalent of £4 million in today’s
    money.

The rich, restless second Duke of Westminster, AKA
    Bendor, in his 20s

Another Park Lane mansion was Grosvenor House, belonging to
the dukes of Westminster and one of the largest in London, as befitted the family’s status
and wealth (their huge fortune came from their ownership
of Mayfair). Bendor, the blond and handsome second duke (1879-1953) was known as one of the richest men in England, lavishing jewels on his mistresses,
chief among whom was Coco Chanel.

    The picture gallery, Grosvenor House

A restless soul, Bendor would arrive without warning at any
of his houses (or yachts). All were kept ready: cars fuelled, silver polished,
servants in livery. But after the First World War, during which Grosvenor
House had been requisitioned as a hospital, land prices had
risen so high that even for Bendor it had become
uneconomic and he sold it. It was demolished in 1927 and the Grosvenor House Hotel was built on the site.

Designer Oliver Messel, Devonshire House, 1934

At the other end of the scale was 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of
Cecil Beaton from 1940 to 1975. Superbly furnished by this brilliant photographer,
it was described loftily by the diarist Chips Channon (for
whom the word ‘snob’ could have been invented – in his diaries he declares,
‘I am only really happy with royalty’) as ‘a tiny but super-attractive snuffbox of a house’.

Beaton, himself no social slouch, ran him close: at his parties the women often wore stiletto heels, which
pitted the floor, and later he would point them out, saying, ‘That’s Princess Marina, that’s Julie Andrews, that’s Vivien Leigh…’

French furnishings at 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton

Beaton’s near neighbour in Pelham Place, until the mid-60s, was the great stage designer Oliver Messel.
When Messel’s nephew Tony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord
Snowdon) became engaged to Princess Margaret, Messel laid on a lunch, asking the Princess if there was anyone she would particularly like to
meet. She said she had always greatly admired the witty cabaret
star Bea Lillie and so Messel invited her.

What none of them knew was that Bea Lillie had a drinking
habit. At the end of lunch she slid quietly under the table and was carried upstairs to sleep it off.

Tony and the Princess took their leave and Messel rushed back to his studio, where he was busy with fittings
for Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted by a telephone call.

Cecil Beaton at home in Pelham Place, 1947

‘It’s Kensington Police Station here, Mr Messel,’ said the
voice at the other end. ‘We thought you ought to know that there’s a naked
woman on your balcony, throwing bottles at everyone who passes by.’

Among the last of these fascinating residences
to survive was the aforementioned Londonderry
House. Throughout the 20s and 30s it had seen receptions and balls, hosted
by the Londonderrys for their four daughters and two granddaughters.
When eventually it had to go, in July 1962,
a farewell party for 300 was given by Alastair, the 9th Marquess.
Live sounds were supplied by a blues band featuring a swaggering young Mick Jagger, no less – presaging the rise of a whole new swinging London generation.
