Motihari : Five persons including two women were killed and two dozen others were injured in East Champaran
district on May 30, 2019, as a strong wind with thunderstorm and rain swept the district. Around 100 thatched houses were  blown up, 65 electric poles were  damaged, and more than 100 trees were uprooted, according to  official reports. Mango and litchi fruits were badly damaged in the thunderstorm. DM, East Champaran, Raman Kumar, has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of all the five deceased.

Hari Mahto, Umashankar Mahto, and Prayag Mahto died at village Bisarahiya under Dhaka police station  when a wall
collapsed on them when they were cooking  food for a marriage party there. SDM, Sikrahna, Gyan Prakash, confirmed the death. Afroj Khatoon, 14, also died in the storm at village Sunderpur under Banjariya police station after she was hit by a flying object. Suganti Devi died at village Lamauniya under Banjariya police station when an electric pole fell on her due to strong wind.

According to Disaster Management Department sources, a high velocity wind packing speed up to 50 km per hour swept East
Champaran district  on May 30, 2019, evening, followed by thunderstorm and pre-monsoon rains. The electric supply in Motihari  town was stopped for 24 hours and had not been till May 31 evening. Sunil Ranjan, Assistant engineer , electricity (supply), said the damaged wires are being repaired.
