Patna : Twentyeight persons were killed and a large number of people injured on August 25, 2017, in violence, arson and police firing after the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda Head Gurmeet Ram Rahim,50, in a 2002 rape case by a special CBI court, Panchkula, Haryana. Most of the death were caused by bullet injuries. Curfew has been enforced at Panchkula. The quantum of punishment would be pronounced on August 28. Dera Sacha Sauda has its headquarters at Sirsa, Haryana.

The self styled Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim has also acted in two films including Messanger of God (MSG). He was arrested after his conviction in the rape case. His followers went on rampage after the court verdict and set afire around one hundred vehicles and even buildings. Police responded by opening fire.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on August 25, 2017,  appealed to the people particularly supporters of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Sing to maintain peace in the wake of the Dera Sacha Sauda chief’s conviction in a rape case. Singh said he took stock of the situation in Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh in the wake of violence following conviction of the Dera chief.
