Patna : Fifth seed Alexander Zverev, 23, Germany, beat 27th seed Borna Coric, 23, Crotia, in a tough four-set battle in the men’s singles quarter-finals of US Open (Tennis) at Newyork City, Newyork, USA, on September 9, 2020, late night, to set up a semi-finals showdown with 20th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, 29, Spain, on September 12, 2020.

Busta beat 12th seed Denis Shapovalov, 21, Canada, in a five-set marathon on September 9, 2020. Busta had also reached SFs of US Open in 2017. Zverev has reached US Open SFs for the first time. The German had also reached Australian Open SFs in 2020 besides reaching French Open QFs in 2018 and 2019.

Zverev beat Coric 1-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3 in QFs. The German hammered 18 Aces in the match to 5 by Coric. Zverev won 4 break points in the match to 3 by the Croatian. Zverev , however, committed 12 double faults also to just 2 by Coric. The Croatian won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by the German. Coric had defeated 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, Greece, in a five-set marathon in third round. It was Coric’s first QFs appearance in a Grand Slam.

Busta beat 12th seed Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 0-6, 6-3 in QFs outlasting 26 Aces hammered by the Canadian. Busta fired 5 Aces. Shapvalov won 8 break points in the match to 5 by Busta. The Spainiard, however, won both the tie-breaks. Shapovalov won 6 games in a row during the match to 3 by Busta, who lost the fourth set 0–6 after winning the second and third sets in tie-breaks. But, the Canadian committed 11 double faults too in the match. Shapovalov had upset 7th seed David Goffin, Belgium, in Round of 16.
