Yeddiurappa takes oath as Karnataka CM

Patna : The BJP legislature party leader B S Yeddiurappa, 75, was sworn-in as the chief minister of Karnataka at 9 am on May 17, 2018, after the Supreme Court, in a rare over three hour post-midnight hearing beginning 2.11 am on a petition by Congress and Janata Dal (Secular), refused to stop the ceremony.

The Supreme Court has, however, said that the swearing-in and government formation will be subject to the outcome of the case. The hearing will resume on May 18. The SC has also asked Yeddiurappa to file his reply.

The Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has asked Yeddiurappa to prove his majority on the floor of the House within 15 days. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats, 8 less than a simple majority, while Congress- JD(S) after their post poll alliance, have 116 members. Congress had won 78 seats while JD(S) had won 37.

Yeddiurappa has become the chief minister of Karnataka for the third time. He first became the chief minister in 2007 and then from 2008 to 2011. He is a Lok Sabha Member since 2014.
