Patna : Wrestler Bajrang Punia, 24, from Jhajjar, Haryana, was one win away from clinching his first Asian Games gold medal on August 19, 2018. Bajrang, the Commonwealth Games gold medallist at Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018, who got a bye in the first round, won all three bouts on technical superiority in the 65kg category.
Bajrang beat Uzbekistan’s Sirojiddin (13-3), Tajikistan’s Fayziev Abdulqosim (12-2) and Mongolia’s N Batmagnai Batchuluu (10-0) to storm into the gold medal round. Bajrang had won silver medal in 2014 Asian Games at Incheon in 61 kg category.

But, Sushil Kumar (74kg), the two time Olympic medallist, and Sandeep Tomar (57kg) crashed out in abig blow to India. Sushil lost 3-5 to Bahrain’s Adam Batirov.
