World No 64 Joao Sousa stuns World No 9 Khachanov at ATP St Petersbug Open

Patna : World No 64 Joao Sousa, 30, Portugal, stunned World No 9 and 2nd seed Karen Khachanov, 23, Russia, in Round of 16 of St Petersburg Open,  an ATP 250 points event played on hard courts, at St Petersburg, Russia, on September 19, 2019, to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Sousa beat Khachanov in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 in 1 hr 38 minutes in Round of 16. Sousa won 2 break points to 1 by Khachanov. He also won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by Khachanov. The Russian, however, fired 9 Aces in the match to 3 by Sousa. Khachanov committed 4 double faults to 1 by Sousaa. The Russian won 51 service points to 50 by Sousa.

The winning percentage of both the players on their first serve was equal ( 75% each). But, Sousa’s winning percentage oh his second serve was 68 % to  48 % of Sousa.

World No 13 Matteo Berrettini, 23, Italy, the 3rd seed, defeated World No 77 Roberto Carballes Baena, 26, Spain, 6-1, 6-2 in 56 minutes to enter the QFs of the tournament. Berrettini won 4 break points in the match besides winning 5 games in a row. Berrettini fired 5 Aces in the match to 1 by Baena, who committed 4 double faults. Berrettini will face Egor Gerasimov, 26, Belarus, in the QFs on September 20, 2019.
