Tai Tzu Ying beat Zhang in straight games 21-15, 21-17 in just 30 minutes. World No 5 Nozomi Okuhara, 23, Japan, beat Michelle Li, 27, Canada, 21-18, 23-21 in 51 minutes in her first match.

In the Men’s section, World No 3 Chou Tien Chen, 28, Chinese Taipei, beat World No 7 Anthony Sinisuka Jinting, 22, Indonesia, in a three-game thriller 17-21, 21-18, 21-18 in 76 minutes. World No 2 Shi Yuqi, 22, China, beat World No 6 Son Wan Ho, 30, South Korea, in another three-game thriller 16-21, 21-19, 21-8 in 65 minutes.
